Tony Leung Ka Fai joined the actors training program run by the television station TVB after studying design at the Hong Kong Institute of Technology. He entered the film industry in 1983 when he was chosen by director Li Han Hsiang to play the leading role in the films Burning of The Imperial Palace and Reign Behind the Curtain. He then walked away with his first Best Actor Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards with his debut performance. After playing opposite Chow Yun Fat in Prison on Fire and collaborating with Tsui Hark in various works including The King of Chess, Tony gradually earned a reputation for being a credible actor in all genres ranging from literary films to comedies. He won Taiwan's Golden Horse Best Actor Award for Farewell China and picked up his second Hong Kong Best Actor Award with 92 Legendary La Rose Noire. In 1992, his starring role in Jean-Jacques Annaud's L'amant (The Lover) propelled him to international stardom, and in 1998, he co-produced and starred in the independent film Love Will Tear Us Apart which was invited into competition at the Cannes Film Festival. In total, Tony has appeared in more than 90 films including Stanley Kwan's Actress (aka Centre Stage) and Wong Kar Wai's Ashes of Time.
