In a provincial town in Japan lives a group of eccentric yet utterly ordinary people. A police officer rushes to the scene of a hit-and-run accident. He has a twin brother who does not look at all like him. A wandering man and woman take up residence in an abandoned house. A philandering man makes his wife work while he plays around. And there's a girl who would give her body if asked. Their lives become intertwined when a bar of gold and a severed man's head turn up from a frozen lake.
