Q&A (PiFan 2011)

The Beast-PiFan 023.jpg

Q&A took place after a screening of "The Beast" at the 2011 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival on July 16, 2011. Appearing on stage is movie director Hwang Yu-Sik (left), main actor Jung Suk-Won (center) and main actress Jeon Se-Hong (right). AsianMediaWiki editor Ki Mun was there and transcribed/translated the session.

  • Moderator - Was there any difficulties in filming the action scenes for "The Beast"?
  • Jung Suk-Won (actor) - The other actors were not stuntmen so there was some difficulties. Even though we wanted to do strong action scenes, we were worried they might get hurt. I had to hold back a little bit. There weren't any series injuries, but some minor injuries like in the internet cafe where I punched the computer montior with my fist. I had to get 7-8 stitches because of that accident. Other actors also suffered minor injuries.
  • Jeon Se-Hong (actress) - I didn't have any actions scenes so I can't comment on that. What was difficult for me was having the right expressioins. For action scenes, they often had close-ups of my face for reactions to the action scenes. I actually had to memorize their action scenes so I could make the proper expressions at just the right time.

  • Moderator - Before "The Beast" there were similar films like "The Man From Nowhere" and "Taken." Did those movies influence "The Beast?"
  • Hwang Yu-Sik (director) - I won't deny those movies had some influence, because when I planned the "Beast" those films were popular.

  • Moderator - I understand this is your first feature film. When you first watched your completed film what was your reaction?
  • Hwang Yu-Sik (director) - I was satisfied that the movie was completed and I put in aspects that I found appealing.

  • Moderator - Jung Suk-Won was involved in action scenes thorughout the movie. You start to have the image of the beast. Were there any funny or difficult episodes in filming and, also, how do you feel about your image becoming "The Beast?"
  • Jung Suk-Won (actor) - I picked up the nickname "The Beast," I appreciate any nicknames placed on me. For memorable scenes, there is a scene in the internet cafe. My character Tae-Hoon wanted to crush all the computers in the room, but only one computer was allowed to be broken. I had to think a lot about how to hold the proper expression for that scene. The second one would be when I had a fight scene with Jae-Gi wielding a knife. At that time it was very cold. The space was also limited so we practed in a small space. There was also a cliff behind the shooting location for that fight scene. There wasn't any protection mechanisms behind us either so we had to be careful. When it was time to film the scene we discovered the actual spot wasn't even half as a big as we practiced for. That was difficult, but luckily the director was able to get good shots. I felt satisfied.

  • Moderator - Filming took place largely at night and in dark places. Did that cause any difficulties?
  • Jeon Se-Hong (actress) - Unlike what my appearance may seem like, I don't get scared easily. I don't mind cold weather or being in the dark when shooting. This movie isn't comparable to what I felt while filming "Missing". During that movie I was much more scared and found it difficult. My character in "Missing" was held in captivity. On the shooting set for "The Beast" I was usually the only female actress so the staff often treated me like a princess.

  • Audience Question - Did Jung Suk-Won perform all the action scenes by himself?
  • Jung Suk-Won (actor) - I did all the action scenes involving my character myself and the others actors also did their own action scenes. Personally, it was hard to memorize all the action sequences. I did try my best, but I don't feel fully satisfied.

  • Audience Question - Curious about the movie title "The Beast," why did you pick that title?
  • Hwang Yu-Sik (director) - That comes from the expression, when we see some cruel or horrible person, we say that person is worse than a beast. We don't apply human standards to that person and deal with them accordingly. I wanted to express that idea in the title.

  • Moderator - (Jung Suk-Won) You first started out as an action actor (stuntman), so I think this movie means something to you. How long did you prepare for the role and what made you decide to take the part?
  • Jung Suk-Won (actor) - I started out as an action actor and then I started to branch out in smaller character roles. During my early acting career, unlike my image in the movie, I played soft characters. When I was asked to take part in this movie I enthusiastickally said yes. I thanked the director for asking me and thinking of me for the role. In hindsight, I don't think I was ready for the acting part, but the director tried to make me comfortable by saying "There's not a lot of lines in the movie, so don't worry." For the action scenes, the director showed us the movie "The Bourne Ultimatum" and mentioned that the action scenes would look like that. I just followed the director's commands. I concentrated on the basic action moves and raising my emotions appropriately. I remember that the most.

  • Moderator - (Jeon Se-Hong) You mentioned the movie "Missing." In that movie you were held captive. I'm curious if this time around you wanted to take part in the action?
  • Jeon Se-Hong (actress) - It would be a lie if I said no. One of the reasons I took part in "The Beast" was because it's an action movie. I felt in the movie "Missing" I was held captive, but in "The Beast" I get to bravely search out for the captive person. Also, I was cast for the movie right before they began shooting. I was busy during the filming trying to capture her emotions correctly. Next time I have a chance to take part in an action movie I would like to take part in the action scenes.

  • Moderator - Is there anything the director wants to say to audience through the movie?
  • Hwang Yu-Sik (director) - I care about about people's pain and sadness and sometimes that pain is enjoyed by others. I wanted the audience to be aware of that.

  • Moderator - Because of a lack of budget were there any constraints in filming what you wanted? How did you overcome that type of situation?
  • Hwang Yu-Sik (director) - I had to shoot this movie in one month. It's not typically possible to film an action movie in one month. Since I had already thrown my hat in the ring, I developed strategies to make it work. One was not to use stuntmen for the action scenes. Second was to cast the main actor from an action school background, but also having the potential to work as an actor. For the action scenes, we rehearsed as much as possible to make everything work more efficiently when it was time to film. Using this strategy we were able to able to complete the film in one month.

  • Moderator - What were your first impressions of each other when you first met?
  • Jeon Se-Hong (actress) - When I first saw Jung Suk-Won I thought he was tall and handsome, but he didn't speak very much. As time went by, he became more playful and took funny pictures.
  • Jung Suk-Won (actor) - When I first met Jeon Se-Hong, I knew she was in this business for a longer time so I didn't open up as much as she was my senior. When, I first saw her I thought she was even prettier than in her movies. I think she is a good actress.

  • Moderator - What projects do you have coming up and what are you long term goals?
  • Jeon Se-Hong (actress) - I want to become known as good actress. "The Beast" will be released on July 28, I will work hard to promote the film. In September I will perform on the stage and a TV drama as well.
  • Jung Suk-Won (actor) - I feel unsatisfied with my acting in the movie, so I'll try to improve my acting. I am acting in the movie "Red Scarf". I hope to finish my work in "Red Scarf" without any problems. I also acted in the new movie "Secrets, Objects," with Jang Seo-Hee, and it's scheduled to come out in September. "Secrets, Objects" is a romantic drama and I am able to show a different side of myself.
  • Hwang Yu-Sik (director) - "The Beast" is released on July 28th. I'll also do my best to promote the film. As Jung Suk-Won mentioned, the movie might not be perfect, but if you want to watch something different please go to the theaters and check out "The Beast."
