Bio
A Super-8 addict since his student days and generally associated with the so-called “intellectual current” of contemporary Japanese cinema, this prolific Japanese film-maker- born in 1964- won the International Critics’ Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes 2000 for Eureka, his most acclaimed movie to date. He started as an assistant director (to Kiyoshi Kurosawa among others), writer and film critic before making his debut as a director in 1996 with Helpless, which won best film and best director awards given by the Japanese association of film professionals. He has also directed musical documentaries such as June 2, 1998-At the Edge of Chaos (1999) and is the co-author of the soundtrack of some of his own films.
