Plot synopsis

Two girls meet on a train headed for Tokyo. The bubbly girl in white is named Nana and she sits next to a black clad rock girl named Nana as well. They talk briefly and seem to share some common bond, before leaving for their own seperate ways. When bubbly Nana looks at an apartment for rent in Tokyo, of course black clad Nana would be there and wants to rent the same apartment. Instead of trying to decide who should get the apartment they decide to share the apartment as roommates. From there their bond grows closer as they help each other deal with their own personal problems.

    Ki Says:

Adapted from a popular Japanese Manga, that I have never read, the movie did seem like watching a live japanimation of sorts, Without knowing anything about the story line I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the two female main characters. The rock star Nana, was played by J-Pop singer Mika Nakashima, in a very understated non-over the top manner.. The tough female rock star character that she played was quite different from her real life music persona as a J-Pop diva, which made it eveb more impressive. The other Nana played by Aoi Miyazak and called Hachi by her friends, carried the movie for me. Her character was less stereotypical and more unpredictable to grasp, which made her the more interesting of the two characters (A cross between Amelie and Audrey Hepburn’s Sabrina character). Quite frankly they could have taken Hachi, her ex-boyfriend Shin, and Shin’s new girlfriend (the one that spoke like a chipmunk) and made a movie around those 3 characters only and it would have been more enjoyable. Anyways the musicians were competently played, the guy that played Ren, I saw him in another film called “Collage Of Life,” which was really bad, so was nice to see him in a better movie, although he seemed to sulk his way throughout this film. The rockers were all a tad bit cliche, but it wasn’t terribly annoying. Towards the end of the film there were some cheesier moments that got tacked on to an otherwise compelling movie (particularly the flashback sequence where Nana and Ren said goodbye at the train station). Overall the movie was better than expected and excelled at being an understated character study of two, seemingly opposite, girls that bonded so well. Worthwhile to check out, comparable to Kamikaze Girls in quality, but nowhere in the league of "Swing Girls", "Hana & Alice", or "Josee, The Tiger & The Fish".

nana 2 unfortunately was quite disappointing, mostly because of the change of actors... the most i'd give it is B- :T

    HK Neo Reviews Says:

Overall, Nana isn’t a perfect cinema, but rarely does Neo have so much fun watching a movie. It is cute, it is fun, it is romantic, it is cool and perhaps these are the exact reasons that Neo like the movie. Nana works well, not because of a perfect story line or a touching score, but rather the capturing of ordinary people with a hint of inspiration and burning flame. Mika is hot, Saeko is damn cute, and while Aoi isn’t exactly Neo’s favourite, there are many that adore her too. All in all, Nana is a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed, and in saying that Neo liked it very much. Bring on Nana 2! For more hotness, check out Yuna Ito in a cameo singing role...(Neo 2007)

    I rate it 9/10
