Plot

Last Friends deals with issues such as domestic violence, sexless couples, and other problems that people suffer today. The youths in this drama are all suffering from different issues. They come to live together in a share house.

Hair stylist assistant Michiru Aida comes across Ruka Kishimoto, her best friend in high school. Ruka is living in a share house with her friend Eri, and is aiming to become a motocross racer. Ruka invites Michiru to live with her in the share house, but Michiru declines because she has plans to start living with her boyfriend Sosuke Oikawa, who works at the child welfare division at the ward office.

The same day at the same store, hair & make-up artist Takeru Mizushima bumps into Ruka and picks up a cup that she dropped and broke. Takeru chases after Ruka to return the cup, but she mistakenly thinks that he's trying to pick her up. Ruka yells at Takeru and walks away.

Soon after this, Michiru moves in with Sosuke. She is filled with happiness when Sosuke promises he'll never leave her side, whatever happens. But one morning, Michiru wakes up to find Sosuke looking at her cell phone checking her text messages...

this drama offers an extremely intriguing development. it contains many scandalous twists within each episode. i like that the characters are subtle and suppress a lot of their emotions. a lot of physical drama is avoided, but one can feel the emotional tension. and they don't take everything out on having sex with every opposite sex--unlike gossip girl! hehe

both the plot and the characters twist into forms i'd never imagined. at first, i thought nishikido's character was really creepy. i couldn't understand him at all. as the plot progressed, i slowly began to grasp his torturous emotions. i actually began to sympathize with him and..like him. at first, i couldn't get used to ueno acting as a tomboy after watching her play the bright, wild, and innocent girl in "nodame cantabile." but ueno threw me off by executing ruka perfectly. i even started to think "kakkoii~" hehe. also, i liked that eita played a bigger role than i imagined. basically, i loved how the ueno-eita-mizukawa trio's characters in this is drastically different and much more complex than theirs were in nodame cantabile. [i'd recommend watching that first.]

I guess, Sosuke must go so that Michiru can be free. Drama directors chose Sosuke to commit suicide. Supposed Sosuke is not 'that' possessive, I think, Michuru and Sosuke will live happily. This is a great drama about life. I am glad that they all can overcome the burden of their past. Life is beautiful at last. Ganbatte!!

i have no idea why nagasawa masami is listed as the main (maybe because the drama started with her?), but OBVIOUSLY ruka was the more prominent character in the drama! i think they should've made ruka the main... anywho, i really felt sorry for ruka, more than i did for michiru, 'cos michiru was just askin' for it! going back to him and betraying her friends... oh yeah, i wonder why ruka likes michiru anyway, i would definitely choose takeru

I agree with Mitzmin's comment, especially Ryo's psycopath role. At the end Sosuke killed himself to let Michiru free. Sad but also relieve...

I loved Ueno Juri in this show. She played the tomboy really well. Over all, I think this is a great series. I just wished that they had focused more on Ueno and her Gender Identity Disorder.
