Born in 1959, he studied filmmaking at Chungang University. Also a member of 1st alumni of Korean Film Academy, he started his film career as a writer, working on several acclaimed films in late 80s. He made his debut as a director with the film 'Walking All the Way to Heaven' and marked himself with his masterful piece 'Rule of the Game', his second film. With mesmerizing storyline and dark side of the world he stylizes in his films, he is also known as a frontier of Korean noir film in 90s.
