[edit] Director's Statement
I started to understand my father when I reached the age of my father with whom I first became dissatisfied. It was at the age when I had lived just as long as he had lived before. From that time on, I slowly began to see my father for a second time and recognized that he has gotten old. I realized that this meant he could leave me at any time without any notice.
Ever since then, I gradually thought about this film, about the time we should consider how to live the last days of our life, about what we should leave behind for others, and about what we couldn't accomplish......During this time, I found this elderly man.
He is part of a generation slowly being lost, a generation which holds memories not found anywhere on this planet. A world which was colonized and liberated, a war which followed, a country divided, the loss of his hometown, and a family separated. He has been through these tumultuous times, but they now can only be looked at as a pastime remembered only in history books.
This elderly man has walked through the core of these times. He was born in the northern region of the Korean peninsula, lived under Japanese imperialism, experienced liberation, and saw all of his family die in front of him during the Korean War.
He became a war orphan, so he had to leave his hometown and live in an unfamiliar place all by himself. Then his wife passed away after suffering through a disease for forty years. He was getting ready to commit suicide, but was then given a chance to visit his hometown which he had never expected to see again. Although this film is about things I can never experience, it is a story about reaching an age nearing death and how a great tragedy in history has changed one man's life.
I wish this film could deeply touch a lot of hearts even though it doesn't scream out to the audience.
