SABU (Hiroyuki Tanaka) was born in Wakayama, Japan in 1964. He began his professional career as a musician and singer before switching to acting, starring in Otomo Katsuhiro’s World Apartment Horror in 1991. He began his career as a film director in 1996 and soon established himself as one of the world’s most well regarded directorial talents.

He directed his first feature film, D.A.N.G.A.N. Runner, in 1996. The film was critically acclaimed both in Japan and on the international film festival circuit. This film was also screened at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. His second feature, Postman Blues (1997), received overwhelmingly positive reviews and won SABU the Best New Director Award at the Cognac Film Festival. This love comedy was later sold to Korea, Hong Kong and various territories in Europe. He finished his third feature, Unlucky Monkey, in 1997, and it was selected to participate at the Berlin International Film Festival. His fourth feature film, Monday, garnered the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2000. With The Blessing Bell (2003), SABU won the NETPAC Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
