Born in Tokyo, 1962. Joined TV production company TV Man Union, Inc., where he directed a number of prize-winning documentaries, such as "However.." a film exploring the suicide of a high government official responsible for the welfare of Minamata mercury poisoning victims. Made his theatrical feature debut with "Maborosi" (95), which won the Golden Osella at the 1995 Venice Film Festival. His fourth feature, "Nobody Knows", after the successful second feature "After Life" (99) of which remake rights were bought by 20th Century Fox, and third film "Distance" (01), wich was presented in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, has won him high acclaim world wide.
