Intro

Set in Japan and New York, Heavenly Forest is a junai (true love) story from author Ichikawa Takuji, based on his novel "Renai Shashin: Mo Hitotsu no Monogatari" which was written as a spin-off of Tsutsumi Yukihiko's 2003 film "Collage of Our Lives" (Renai Shashin) starring Hirosue Ryoko and Matsuda Ryuhei. Ichikawa is best known as the progenitor of the "Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu" (Be With You) phenomenon, having penned the bestselling novel which became a massive hit movie starring future couple Nakamura Shido and Takeuchi Yuko.

Plot

The story is about a photographer called Makoto (Tamaki Hiroshi), who travels to New York during Christmas to look for his best friend, Shizuru (Miyazaki Aoi). The two first met when Makoto attended his university entrance ceremony. Due to his inferiority complex, Makoto tends to shy away from other people but Shizuru managed to make him open up to her. Because of their friendship, Shizuru also ended up taking an interest in photography and the two often went to a forest to take pictures. Shizuru wants nothing else but to be by Makoto's side so when he started liking another girl called Miyuki (Kuroki Meisa), Shizuru decided that she too will like Miyuki and becomes her friend. One day, Makoto asked Shizuru what present she'd like to receive for her birthday. Shizuru, who wanted to enter a photography competition, had an idea to take a picture of the two of them kissing in a forest. Makoto agreed to do this and the two kissed for the very first time. Ever since that day, however, Shizuru disappears from Makoto's life.

i really love this movie. i cried a lot i'm recommending it to my friends

it's just a pity that makoto only realized that he love shizuro when he kissed her and after that she disappear.

    then she died huhuhu

"if you love someone say what you mean. mean what you say because opportunity came in a blink of an eye and regret last for a lifetime"

    my favorite lines are

"it is the desease when you fall in love" by shizuru
"if you kiss me I will die happy" by makoto
"i didn't told that I'm ill and I suddenly die I'm really sorry makoto"
"farewell always arrive before the realization of our feelings"

i think this is better than the other version

That was the first Asian movie that I saw and was not about marital arts. This movie inspired me to explore Asian cinema more and I am grateful for that.
As for the movie itself, it is a masterpiece of everything: music, scenery, plot, actors. I laughed and cried, felt mad or frustrated. It is really worth seeing!

“…Love ..love …love” Excuse me for a moment. “There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done. Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung.” Now people in the back row sing with me “All you need is LOVE! …LOVE is all you need!” Whew - with that out of my system I can now turn my attention back to “Heavenly Forest.”

“Heavenly Forest” is a film adapted from Ichikawa Takuji’s novel “”Renai Shashin: Mo Hitotsu no Monogatari.”” The novel by Ichikawa Tauki was actually written as a spin-off to the 2003 film “Collage of Our Lives.” As with “College of Our Lives” you have two main characters in “Heavenly Forest” that loves photography, enters a photography contest and eventually winds up moving to New York City. Fortunately, “Heavenly Forest” is not anywhere as bad as the pretentious borefest known as “Collage Of Our Lives.”

The story in “Heavenly Forest” is a familiar one involving two outcasts : Shizuru (Aoi Miyazaki) and Makoto (Hiroshi Tamaki). Makato is a shy young teen, very self-conscious of smelling bad around others and thus hangs out by himself mostly. During the first day of orientation at his university Makoto meets Shizuru. Shizuru is a petite girl that looks far younger than her age and eats only candy sized donuts. She also has the appearance of Pippi Longstocking if she came from a Japanese manga. The two outsiders hit it off splendidly and quickly become friends. Makato shares his love of photography with Shizuro and the two spends their time taking pictures of the Heavenly Forest. Unfortunately, Shizuro is in love with Makoto, but Makoto has a crush on another girl named Miyuki.

With the help of Shizuro’s friendship, Makoto becomes more confident and eventually befriends Miyuki. The two spend more and more time together as Shizuro looks on as the third wheel. One day Shizuro asks Makoto to help her with a photo she is composing for a photo competition. She takes a photo of herself and Makoto kissing for the first time. After that day…Shizuro disappears.

A love story like this certainly has the potential to become a formulaic yawn fest, but fortunately “Heavenly Forest” is more of an entertaining smile-fest. The film is filled with eye candy and the pacing is refreshingly upbeat. The principle cinematographer in “Heavenly Forest” ss Shinjo Takehiko, a well known director of Japanese drama shows. Like those Japanese television dramas, “Heavenly Forest” has a vibrant modern look filled with sharp looking people everywhere. Aoi Miyazaki and Hiroshi Tamaki are compelling in their leading roles, even if they tended to exaggerate their facial expressions too much in their earlier years. Hiroshi Tamaki actually speaks in a higher pitched voice to seem younger than his age. Props goes out to Aoi Miyazaki for taking on a role that seems out of character for her. Even though she looks cute as a button with the glasses and frizzy hair, when the glasses came off the change is stunning.

The film concludes on a more sentimental note ready to pull on the heartstrings of the viewers. Although I didn’t enjoy these moments as much the rest of the film – it could have been a lot worse. Thankfully the scenes are refined enough that the cutesy melodrama elements doesn’t become overbearing. In a way the ending scenes recalled the spirit of one of my all time favorite films “Failan” but aims squarely for the hearts and minds of the teenage crowd. For me personally, the charm of “Heavenly Forest” is simply Aoi Miyazaki and when she appears so does the smiles. Overall, “Heavenly Forest” is an engaging film that seems especially well suited for teens & teens still at heart. “Love ..Love…Love…”
