- Son of Genyoshi Kadokawa, the founder of Kadokawa Shoten: one of leading publishing companies in Japan.
- In 1975 inherited the position of president of the publishing house Kadokawa Shoten and soon guided the company into film production.
- In 1993 Haruki Kadokawa was charged with smuggling and embezzling money from Kadokawa Shoten to fund purchase of drugs (cocaine). He resigned from his president position at Kadokawa Shoten and eventually served two-and-half years in jail, from 2001 to 2004.
