Dearest Ryudo
You may not remember me...I was the recording and mix engineer on two of your albums in the late 1980's and early 1990's. My entire experience during my time with you was one of the most memorable in my life. The music, my enduring friendships with you and many of your band members (especially your bass player) have all remained strong in my heart and memory. I have tried, sometimes with great difficulty, to remain current with your many good works. I hope that your many film projects have not kept you from continuing to make great music. Among the many Japanese recording projects I had the honor to work on, yours was by far the most successful and interesting blend of the musical influences of both of our countries.
I taught at the Berklee College of Music for 15 years before my health failed me. My backbone has crumbled in several important places and my life has been consumed by pain, surgery and powerful medications. My memories of the wonderful times that we spent together help me get through my current difficulties and for that I am forever grateful. One of my close friends is from Kamakura and he was fascinated by your idea that I had been Japanese in a former life. He has gone so far as to identify the 13th century as my time in your beautiful country. On one of his visits home to see his parents, he brought me a small, golden statue of Chuken Hachiko and is in a place of honor in my home.
I send my love and good wishes in the new year to you and your family. Thank you again for the great gift of your friendship and the honor of inviting me to assist in the making of such wonderful music.
I remain your loyal friend,
Bill Scheniman
