Bio
Apichatpong was born in Bangkok in 1970 and trained as an architect before studying film-making at the Art Institute of Chicago. Working independently and outside of the strict regulations of the Thai film studio system, he began making avant-garde shorts in 1994, as seen in the programme Malee and the Boy...and other shorts. His feature debut Mysterious Object at Noon (2000) came next: an experimental fusion of fiction and documentary in rural Thailand. His sensual romance Blissfully Yours (2002) was awarded the Prix Un Certain Regard in Cannes and received widespread critical praise for its sumptuous visuals and unconventional narrative. The Adventure of Iron Pussy (2003), about a secret agent who cross-dresses as a housemaid, is Apichatpong’s most elaborate homage to Thai pop culture. Tropical Malady (2004), an intense and haunting love story, won the Grand Jury prize in Cannes, among many other awards.
